Keeping a Clean Home With Pets

***Chris here! I run the show on this blog, but when someone wants us to share a guest article, they're often too good to refuse! This post is from Nicole G. who runs a blog on home improvement, cleaning, and organizing. This is a great read for anyone who has little tolerance for uncleanliness due to pets!***

How to maintain a clean home with pets
Owning a pet can definitely bring immense happiness in your life but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t times when you will feel frustrated and annoyed by the mess that comes along with the raising of a pet. But don’t worry! There are plenty of ways to tackle the dirt and odour that is often left behind your pet.
Control the dog hair
Let’s face it, it is impossible to avoid all the dog hair when you are a pet owner, however, you can make this problem less serious and manage the dog hair which spreads around your house. Place a towel or a sheet where your puppy loves to rest. Shake it outside periodically and throw it in the washing machine. The more often you do this, the less dog hair will float around your home. Invest in a good vacuum cleaners which can suck all the hairs instead of just gliding over the mess. If your pet loves resting on your upholstered sofa, you should use a special vacuum attachment for pet hair. Dealing with this issue can be a little burdensome but having your entire home covered in dog hair is definitely more annoying.
Keep the paws clean
Keep a clean towel and a shallow container filled with room-temperature water and leave them next to your door before you take your puppy for a walk. When you come back from your adventures, dip the paws of your pet in the container and dry them with the towel. This will prevent the awful stains and traces which otherwise your puppy may leave all over your house. This is especially helpful during the winter season when the messy paws are something you just can’t avoid.
Clean all the pet items regularly
Pet clothes, beds, toys and even leads can get easily stained and they tend to grab the pet odour which can be pretty strong. This is why you shouldn’t neglect their look and wash them properly more often. Look whether the items can be washed in the washing machine and if they can’t wash them by hand and let them dry somewhere outside your house. The clear air and the sun will help you to get rid of the unpleasant odour.
Choose a proper sofa
If you are planning to buy a new sofa, I recommend you to choose carefully and pick a sofa which will be pet friendly and will save you a lot of trouble. Pay attention to the fabric of the sofa. Leather is the best option when it comes to avoiding pet hairs sticking to your furniture. If buying a new sofa is not within your budget, you can place a throw on the spot where your pet loves laying down. This way you will be able to throw it in the washing machine any time it is needed.
Use a puppy place mat
To avoid the mess that your pet can create when it is eating its food, you can place a mat under its bowl. This way you will be able to clean any food that has been spilled on the floor. A laminated paper works wonders when it comes to an easy and quick cleaning.

If you follow these few tips, you will be able to maintain a good look for your house despite owning a pet. There are plenty of smart ways to tackle the pet hair, the stains and the odour. Once you learn to use them , both you and your pet will be able to enjoy the comfort of your home. After all, pets bring lots of joy and a few cleaning chores are not good enough reason to restrain yourself from this happiness.
